SPA SCENE

By Griffin Miller

Call it the first-class indulgence or the ultimate in upkeep, but in the end, nothing says “Happy Mother’s Day” like a fabulous spa experience. Whether a planned day of personalized treatments or a generous gift certificate, the payoff comes when Mom becomes hooked on “me” time and—of course—looking and feeling phenomenal. And because this is New York, you can find the perfect spa gift at nearly any price point. Here, our recommendations for some platinum pampering for metro moms!

SKIN SPA NEW YORK

Products used at Skin Spa
Created to make spa treatments “affordable for everyone,” Manhattan’s myriad of Skin Spa locations—seven to date—dot the online map like so many tiny beacons, beckoning you to a variety of neighborhoods, each offering top-flight services that won’t break the bank.

Casting its net over a wide demographic (parents bring kids in for their first facial), every location—while featuring the same extensive menu and product lines—has its own personality. “While the basic design of the spas is the same (dark gray flooring, taupe and cream-colored walls with the spa’s Love Your Skin motto etched in gold), each is unique in the clientele it attracts and the décor in its reception area,” explained Spa Manager Courtney Koontz.

As for the menu, the variety is almost overwhelming, running the gamut from waxing, massages, facials to body polishing, laser hair removal and InMode Aesthetic Solution’s cutting edge (without the cutting) technology for tightening, sculpting and cellulite reduction.Created to make spa treatments “affordable for everyone,” Manhattan’s myriad of Skin Spa locations—seven to date—dot the online map like so many tiny beacons, beckoning you to a variety of neighborhoods, each offering top-flight services that won’t break the bank.

THE RIGHT RUB
Always in search of the unique, I decided to try the Himalayan Salt Hot Stone. A lover of traditional black stone massages, I wanted to see how the smooth, pink Himalayan stones compared—especially since Skin Spa is one of the few places in New York to offer this special indulgence.

Described as a treatment aimed at detoxification, rejuvenation, and relaxation, the Himalayan massage provides immediate gratification as the stones are placed on key areas of your back – sometimes directly on your skin, sometimes atop a light fabric. Since the stones can be quite warm, the therapist consults you as to comfort level and adjusts the heat accordingly. The 60-minute service also involves a meticulous shoulder-to-foot Swedish massage. Plus, you get the benefit of the salt itself, which is wonderfully therapeutic.

Notably, the only product used throughout is coconut oil. My therapist, Devin, explained that the coconut oil—known for its outstanding hydrating qualities—is used because Himalayan stones (unlike black stones) are more sensitive to lotions and oils and will disintegrate over time. Coconut oil is the only one that can be rinsed off to preserve the pink stones’ integrity.

Finally, it’s worth noting that Skin Spa’s “affordable for everyone” mantra is evident in its $60 a month membership that comes with numerous perks including a treatment. “And it’s no commitment as long as you cancel by the end of the month,” said Koontz adding that specials and packages are ongoing as well. Check them out for Mother’s Day!

Kimara Ahnert

KIMARA AHNERT NEW YORK
Several years ago I made my first visit to Kimara Ahnert New York on the Upper East Side and was instantly smitten. Everything from the “elegant French townhouse ambiance,” to the “multi-mirrored studio” where Kimara and her handpicked staff work their magic, to the “a small winding staircase” amazed as I ascended for a heavenly facial.

Sadly, I let too much time pass before my recent return. I swear I will not let this happen again. I am, you see, hooked on the Oxygen Facial and the woman who created a world of facial options and delights: Kimara Ahnert.

On my initial visit, I didn’t meet Kimara, but now, after a long chat in her studio/salon, I understand why she’s so in demand as a skincare phenom: her warmth, generosity, and ability to relate one-on-one to clients—skills that she has shared with her staff. Also, she’s totally on top of all aspects of the cosmetic and skincare industry.

ABOUT FACE
“With Instagram, Snapchat, and “selfies” being a way of life, women are more tuned into how they look throughout their day,” she said, adding, “Today, products are more advanced and offer greater benefits if used correctly. Trends come and go but confidence in knowing you look beautiful is what we offer our clients” some of whom include models and celebrities like Anne Hathaway, Christine Ricci, Kevin Kline and Bette Midler.

And non-celebrities like me, who tried Kimara’s most popular skin service: the 60-minute Oxygen Facial. Does it live up to its hype? Let’s just say a week and a half post-treatment I was still getting compliments from friends who never noticed or commented on my skin. (Those wishing to up the stakes, even more, can go for the 75-minute Double Oxygen Facial—or, if you just want a quick jolt of fabulous, you can pop in for an “Oxygen Blast.”)

As for my transformation, it began with my aesthetician, Aneta, and a discussion of any skin issues followed by a skin analysis that would guide her as she customized my facial. From there it was a cleansing followed by exfoliation both accompanied by the softest of massages, so soothing that I think I drifted off a bit during the masque application. Then came gentle extractions that prefaced the main event: a highly concentrated molecular blast of oxygen. And we’re not talking a short blast, but several minute’s worth (or so it seemed).
A sweep of breeze with a hint of fine mist is the only way I can describe it. And addictive. Definitely addictive.

As I said, I’m hooked. Thankfully Kimara’s line of products and services are priced within reason—with a little splurge on the side. Perfect for Mom.
