Story and photos by Karen Covey
The Soho Contemporary Gallery is presenting another great exhibition. With the exhibition’s focus on graffiti art, guests will enjoy numerous original artworks from the 1980s and beyond.
One of the artists, Lady Pink, shared her story of how she began writing graffiti on trains, and has now moved on to doing murals and canvases worldwide. She also mentors young artists. A piece that caught my eye was Lady Pink’s “Unity Tree”. She was commissioned to make this piece in Gavel, Sweden to address immigration issues facing Gavel. She loved the piece so much she did a replica on canvas for the show. She has juxtaposed flowers from different countries of the world on top of a tree. There are even some hidden symbols to honor a friend who is another female graffiti artist.
Other artists included are A-One, Crash, Daze, Fab 5 Eddie, Futura, Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf and Zephyr among others. Definitely worth coming by and checking out some of these graffiti legends that built the scene as we know it today.
