TIME OUT WITH…

Dr. Dendy Engelman

By Adam Morgan

From a new white clinic atop New York City’s skyline, Dr. Dendy Engelman is a sight for fixed eyes: attractive, petite, kind, and full of Southern charm and sass.

She is her own best advertisement and one of the city’s best cosmetic dermatologists, with a clientele that keeps her booked months at a time. Engelman (or “Dr. Dendy,” as she is often called) is a board-certified MD and Mohs surgeon and a star attraction at Gotham’s Shafer Clinic. In addition, she is recognized by many as an expert hand in beauty’s best friends, like neurotoxins, injectable fillers, chemical peels, and the latest facial and body sculpting technology.

Her latest enthusiasm is Emo sculpt NEO, a non-invasive body treatment to eliminate fat cells while toning and strengthening muscles. In 30 minutes, this procedure produces results equivalent to 24,000 sit-ups or squats. For the face, Engelman is excited about Neura Tight, a radiofrequency procedure, also non-invasive, that redefines, revives, and uplifts around the eyes, mouth, cheeks, and neck. “I don’t want anyone to look ‘done’ but the best versions of themselves,” says Engelman. Both procedures produce no side effects or downtime, allowing no disruption to clients’ busy lives.

Among her patients are some of New York’s young fashionistas, who come in for health reasons and emerge with a whole new perspective on beauty and taking preventative measures. “I have a lot of young girls who come in under the guise of ‘I need my body checked,’ and then they want to review their skincare regimen and what products they should be using,” says Engelman.

SUN SENSE
“You have to have a good sunscreen. It is not sexy, and no one wants to talk about it, but if we never have the wrinkles, we never have to Botox it away.” She recommends an SPF of 30 or higher be worn daily for protection. “Whether it’s a cream or a physical blocker, like titanium dioxide, will depend on who wears it, but sunscreen protection is one of the most important rituals you can implement to preserve your skin. Another tip of expert advice is to select a product with hyaluronic acid, a vital ingredient to fight moisture loss by binding one thousand times its molecular weight of water in the

skin. Injected into the skin (Juvéderm, Restylane) or used topically in serums or moisturizers, it produces a youthful plumping effect combating dry skin, one of the most common complaints of aging.

THE NEXT BEST THING
Engelman is the first to admit creating an at-home beauty regimen can be difficult, especially if it involves store-bought cosmetics. “It is so overwhelming,” she acknowledges. “You have ladies at the counter who are telling you about how this potion is the next big thing. It’s a facelift in a jar. And that’s quite compelling. So many marketing claims have no backup to what they’re saying. I wish I could stand there and help guide people where to go and what to invest in,” she says, laughing. They should be so lucky. For more information on Dr. Dendy Engelman, visit drdendyengelman.com
