ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE
Netflix
This World War II drama is based on Anthony Doerr’s best-selling, Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. Starring Aria Mia Loberti in her acting debut as the blind French teen and Louis Hofmann as the German soldier whose lives intersect in the midst of the war, this miniseries follows a fascinating story of a famed diamond being hidden from the Nazis as they advance across France. Mark Ruffalo and Hugh Laurie also star in this much-anticipated series.
THE BUCCANEERS
Apple TV+
This literary adaptation of Edith Wharton’s last novel is a must-see for anyone who loves English period pieces set in the 19th century (like The Age of Innocence and The Gilded Age). The Buccaneers follows the exploits of five wealthy American teenage girls who sail off to London’s debutante season in search of husbands with titles and land. They get more than they bargained for in this peek into a world of gorgeous clothes and unscrupulous men.
FARAWAY DOWNS
Hulu
Baz Luhrmann brings back his 2008 Australia film in this expanded look at the story of Lady Sarah (Nicole Kidman) and Drover (Hugh Jackman) set in the Outback as World War II begins. He’s taken the “two million feet of film” he shot back then and reworked it into a six-episode miniseries with a new ending, to revisit the themes of that Oscar-nominated film. Bryan Brown, Essie Davis, and Brandon Walters co-star.
LAWMEN: BASS REEVES
Paramount+
Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan has teamed up with Ray Donovan producer Chad Feehan to create an Old West series based on the real Bass Reeves, a slave freed during the Civil War who later became one of the first Black U.S. marshals to police the Wild West. David Oyelowo takes the lead, with Dennis Quaid, Donald Sutherland, Barry Pepper, and Garrett Hedlund all strapping on their six guns to join in this throwback to the days when Westerns ruled the U.S. TV airwaves.
MONARCH: LEGACY OF MONSTERS
Apple TV+
Set in both the 1950s and current times, this new series is part of a very old “MonsterVerse”—that of Godzilla and the other monsters that have terrorized Japan and much of the world in this alternate universe. Kurt Russell stars in this fantastical tale of the secret organization called Monarch. Spanning three generations, this epic fantasy also stars Kurt’s son Wyatt Russell, who plays his character in sequences set back in the ‘50s.
