ABIGAIL
Rated: R
When a pretty young ballet dancer (Alisha Weir) is kidnapped, it seems to be all about that 12-year-old’s mobster dad. But when the kidnapper gang holes up in a secluded mansion, things don’t go so well since that tweener also wants to suck their blood! Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton, Kevin Durand, and Giancarlo Esposito also join this latest vampire horror show.
THE FIRST OMEN
Rated: R
As if The Omen (from 1976) and its three franchise sequels weren’t enough to scare you, this prequel to the story of Damien, the devil’s child, may do the job. Nell Tiger Free stars as a nun whose trip to the Vatican uncovers all sorts of evil inside the Catholic Church. Bill Nighy and Charles Dance are at their creepy best in this original nightmare.
THE MINISTRY OF
UNGENTLEMANLY WARFARE
Rated: R
Director Guy Ritchie is obsessed with the idea of “gentlemen” (see his 2019 film The Gentlemen and the newly launched Netflix series of the same name). Still, this group of “ungentlemanly” men is real. This is the fascinating tale of the real-World War II British soldiers who infiltrated behind German lines and took it to the Nazis. It’s also the beginning of Britain’s special forces division; starring Henry Cavill, Carey Elwes, Alan Ritchson, and Til Schweiger, this one’s a rip-roaring wartime adventure.
MONKEY MAN
Rated: R
Actor Dev Patel takes on directing his first full-length film, an action-revenge thriller that he also co-wrote and plays the titular character. Think John Wick in India and you’ll have the idea of this fight-filled tale of a poor man bent on avenging his mother’s murder.
STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL
Rated: R
What’s a 21-year-old male model-actor to do when his mother is Elizabeth Hurley and his late dad was wealthy film producer Steve Bing, who died by suicide? He writes and directs his movie thriller about a young woman’s suicide, naturally. That’s what Damian Hurley has done, with his mom starring, along with Georgia Lock, Genevieve Gaunt, and Lauren McQueen.
