BORDERLANDS
Not yet rated
Lovers of the sci-fi video game have been waiting for almost ten years for this wild adventure-comedy flick to make it to the big screen; and if everyone in it looks younger than they are, it’s because shooting completed in 2021! Special effects, strikes and other things slowed down this tale of a galactic bounty hunter (Cate Blanchett) searching a faraway planet for a missing girl. She’s got a very weird gang, including Kevin Hart, Gina Gershon, and Jamie Lee Curtis, all chewing the scenery in this Eli Roth flick that unfolds at breakneck speed on August 9.
DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE
R
Marvel is positive that joining up Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) is a sure box-office bet. It’s the first MCU to be rated R, as well as Wolverine’s return to the screen after a seven-year absence and Deadpool’s entry into the Marvel Multiverse. If all that seems complicated, just go along for the ride, as Reynolds’ Deadpool character is usually pretty funny, and Jennifer Garner returns as Elektra. Plus, rumor has it that Taylor Swift, Ben Affleck and Patrick Stewart may just turn up, too, on July 26th.
TWISTERS
PG-13
Actor Glen Powell is on a roll, racking up hits both on the big screen (Top Gun: Maverick, Anyone but You) and small (Hit Man). Now he’s the leading man in this storm-swept thriller as tornadoes blow across Oklahoma in a swirl of terrifying special effects. Loosely based on Twister, the 1996 Oscar-nominated megahit, Powell and his co-stars Maura Tierney, Kiernan Shipka, and Daisy Edgar-Jones are once again chasing twisters across the Midwest. Watch for a flying cow, as it’s likely to fly across the screen yet again.
DESPICABLE ME 4
PG
Gru and the Minions return, hooray! Since 2010, they have been making us all laugh at their diabolical antics. In this fourth installment, along with his wife Lucy and Margo, Edith, and Agnes, new adventures begin, including the addition of Gru Jr., who’s a chip off the old block. Together they take on new evil archenemies (voiced by Will Ferrell and Sofia Vergara) on this continuing saga that continues to delight kids and their parents, too.
HAROLD AND THE PURPLE CRAYON
PG
The classic children’s book comes to life in this inspired adaptation of the Crockett Johnson picture book created in 1955. Zachary Levi stars as Harold, who’s been drawing his world for decades when he discovers that there’s a real world. So, he draws himself into it, and the resulting adventures as a real man make for an outrageous adventure that he shares with Moose (Lil Rel Howery), Terry (Zooey Deschanel), and a whole cast of actual human characters.
