We recently caught up with Amy Kalikow to find out more.

Can you tell our readers about your background and how you got started in interior design?
I have always had a passion for interior design and my background was always on the business side of a creative industry in advertising, PR, and invitation design. I would frequent shows and design my own apartments throughout my entire life. Organically, a friend had seen my personal home that I had designed and hired me to design her apartment and then her second home in The Hamptons after that. I had no idea what I was doing initially but I am very resourceful and always up for a challenge, and it was a natural transition for me.

How would you describe your design style?
Functional, timeless, unique.

Where do you find inspiration for your designs?
Design inspiration is everywhere. Living in NYC, I have access to so many great inspirational shows, venues and architecture. I attend shows around the world and love to see how people live in other countries. Vintage furniture and fashion markets are also a great source of inspiration for me as I love to re-imagine pieces from the past.

How do you approach collaborating with clients to understand their needs and preferences?
Design for me is all about collaboration. I like to walk clients’ homes with them and really understand what their needs are and how I can improve on them. In designing a home for a client, it is essential to understand what they are hoping for in their home, delivering the perfect balance of functionality and comfort.

What do you enjoy most about being an interior designer?
Seeing a project come to life and our clients truly enjoying their homes is the best part of being an interior designer.

How do you stay current with trends and changes in the interior design industry?
I read a lot of magazines and travel to different countries such as Paris and Milan to see where design trends are heading. I am not one to go with “trends” per se, but seeing what is out there is always interesting and provoking.

How does Amy Kalikow rest and relax?
I rest and relax with my family. I have four daughters I love and adore and any time spent with them is a joy and a gift. “Summer Amy” is the best version of myself. Being at home with family and friends, long days at the beach or out on the water, simply enjoying the outdoors is most special to me. I love to cook, especially on the grill, and coupled with some great music, I am a happy person.
