Share a bit about your background and what inspired you to pursue dermatology. Growing up, I struggled with acne and recognized the importance of feeling good about yourself in the skin that you are in. I wanted to be a dermatologist to help people feel like the best version of themselves while improving their overall quality of life.
What are some common misconceptions about dermatology that you encounter?
That it is just skincare and pimple popping. Dermatology requires specific training, including at least three years focused on dermatology, in addition to an internship and medical school, to learn over three thousand diagnoses, including chronic medical conditions. Dermatologists are considered the experts in hair, skin, and nails.
What are your thoughts on the growing popularity of natural and organic skincare products?
Ultimately, skincare can be a personal choice, and if someone feels more comfortable using natural or organic products, which may be fine. However, people need to know that just because something is natural doesn’t necessarily make it better. Some natural products may contain fragrances or oils that contribute to skin sensitivity and irritation.
What do you find most rewarding about your work as a dermatologist?
Building long-lasting patient relationships is one of dermatologists’ most rewarding parts. It is an honor to have people trust me with their skin, and I look forward to seeing them year after year and visit after visit. I love watching patients gain confidence and hearing about how their quality of life has improved by helping their skin. Being able to save someone’s life by identifying and diagnosing skin cancer is always a humbling part of being a dermatologist.
Lastly, what are your top tips for maintaining healthy skin as we age?
The most important thing you can do to maintain healthy skin as you age is to use sunscreen daily to protect the skin from UV damage. UV rays can contribute to signs of skin aging, including fine lines, wrinkles, brown spots, and skin sagging. Other tips include always removing makeup at night, as this helps to minimize potential skin irritation and sensitivity and remembering to moisturize the skin to keep it looking hydrated and plump.
