Elegance In New Hampshire’s White Mountains

By Jeff & Stephanie Sylva

Since its humble beginnings as a traveler-welcoming farmhouse in 1865, much has changed at this grand hotel set at the picturesque peaks of New Hampshire’s White Mountains. One thing remains the same: its inception as an inn that remains today is its most alluring quality. That one constant is perfectly reflected in the resort’s name—Mountain View Grand.

The view of the White Mountains’ Presidential Range, which one enjoys while sitting in one of the many Adirondack chairs on the inn’s expansive veranda, is nothing short of spectacular. Include the well-manicured lawns of the resort’s nine-hole golf course that slopes down from the front of the inn, and the view is mesmerizing.

The resort is a 1,700-acre natural playground located in Whitefield, New Hampshire. A recent multi-million-dollar renovation has enhanced the guest experience perfectly, preserving historical details and classic architecture while offering modern amenities that offer comfort and luxury.

The Mountain View Grand is the AAA Four Diamond Award-winning four-season resort recognized on the National Register of Historic Places. It offers 141 well-appointed guest rooms and suites, many with outstanding views of the mountains.

DELICIOUS DINING
Four dining options are available, ranging from classic elegance to scenic casual. An elegant atmosphere awaits guests in Harvest Tavern. A menu focused on local sourcing is offered for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Consider the Cedar Plank Faroe Island Salmon or the Six-Hour Braised Lamb Shank. An outdoor terrace is perfect for alfresco dining in the warmer months. The Harvest Tavern Bar offers the full Tavern menu in a casual, convivial setting.

An even more elevated dining experience is offered in the 1865 Wine Cellar. A four-course, prix-fixe menu is served in the intimate setting of the Resort’s Wine Cellar. A complimentary glass of Champagne is served with the opening charcuterie board of artisanal meats and local cheeses. In fact, Mountain View Grand has been selected as a winner of the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence since 2009 for its outstanding wine list.

During warmer months, enjoy the view of the mountains as you dine on the veranda. In addition to various sandwiches, burgers, and wraps, a newly introduced signature pizza menu highlights various delectable options. The Maple Bacon pizza was delicious.

YEAR-ROUND FUN
The gorgeous mountain view may tempt you to wile away the hours, but the list of activities offered at Mountain View Grand will spur you to get involved. A printed schedule of activities is available at the front desk each morning. Check on the movies playing in the 16-seat In-House Movie Theater. See if an Adult Axe Throwing competition, a Water Aerobics Class, a Yoga class, or an Evening Campfire is scheduled. A variety of lawn ga)s are available.

Mountain View Grand Resort is an excellent choice for families, as many family-friendly activities are offered year-round. The resort’s signature kids’ camp, Mountain Adventure Camp, offers a variety of activities, including crafts, cooking demonstrations, and guided excursions. Winter fun includes exploring Mountain View Grand’s 10 miles of trails on snowshoes, cross-country skis, or a snowmobile available for rent nearby. Skate on the resort’s pond or snow tube on the hills. Enjoy a horse-drawn sleigh ride or a dog-sled adventure with a local kennel.

Everyone loves to visit the resort’s Mountain View Farm and interact with the many animals. Scheduled goats or llama walks are extremely popular. Meet with the farmer to learn about farm operations and animal care. Kids love gathering newly hatched chicken and duck eggs. In the fall, help the farmer gather some “drop apples” and press them for the freshest apple cider ever.

Other resort activities include mountain biking, disc golf, tennis, and pickleball. The resort has indoor/outdoor pools, a fitness center offering a variety of classes, and a game room with a pool table, air hockey, foosball, and ping pong. Of course, Mountain View Grand’s historic 9-hole golf course offers challenging play in a scenic setting.

SPA EXPERIENCES
Don’t miss the chance to enhance your experience at Mountain View Grand with a visit to the Tower Spa for one of their many treatments. The Spa’s 12 treatment rooms are located on the inn’s top floor, along with serene lounges for both men and women. Plush seating, rejuvenating showers, and secure lockers to store your belongings are featured. A co-ed relaxation lounge can also be reserved for special occasions.

For a unique spa experience, book the Grand Tower Experience. The Grand Tower is an exclusive space in the resort’s signature tower, offering stunning views of the surrounding peaks. This 2-hour session for couples starts as you unwind in the secluded lounge, followed by a 50-minute Swedish massage in the private Tower treatment room. Return to the lounge for more relaxation in this iconic setting. You can customize your experience with various food and beverages from the spa cuisine menu.
