Salamander Hotels

Luxury from “Capital to Country”

By Jeff and Stephanie Sylva

Whether it’s a stunning urban hotel in our nation’s capital or a multiple-award winning resort on a picturesque 340-acre estate in Virginia’s horse and wine country, the Salamander Collection boasts two outstanding hospitality choices. But don’t choose just one. Enjoy both locations – and experience the luxury from Capital to Country.

The Salamander Collection is a portfolio of seven hotel destinations committed to Founder and CEO Sheila Johnson’s promise – to provide a sense of comfort and gracious hospitality from the moment you arrive.

Five-Star Luxury
No place does this better than Salamander Middleburg. Salamander Middleburg is the first destination resort in the D.C. area to receive the Forbes Five-Star Award for its hotel and restaurant, and the only Forbes Five-Star spa in Virginia. The resort is one of only five properties in the nation to earn separate Forbes Five Star awards for its accommodations, restaurant, and spa. The resort has 168 spacious rooms and suites, and all include an outdoor patio or balcony with seating offering outstanding countryside views.

Endless activities
The list of activities at Salamander Middleburg is endless, but at the top is the 22-stall equestrian center with its instructional programming, equine experiences, and miles of scenic riding trails. The Equestrian Center is also home to the resort’s adorable brand ambassador, Cupcake, a thirteen-year-old miniature horse.

Other activities include tennis and pickleball, a fitness center with a variety of fitness classes, an indoor lap pool, miles of hiking and biking trails, fishing, falconry, clay shooting, archery, axe throwing, a variety of lawn games, and an exhilarating tree-top zipline course. Camp Salamander will keep the little ones busy with creative games and crafts and outdoor activities. The resort will soon unveil its new outdoor, multi-level pool complex featuring heated family and adult pools, and full-service kitchen and bar.

Be sure to take some time to explore and experience the Middleburg area, the heart of Virginia’s wine and horse country. Salamander’s complimentary car service will shuttle you to Middleburg’s quaint downtown or three of the town’s wineries. Enjoy a wonderful tasting at Boxwood Estate Winery, Greenhill Vineyards, or Cana Vineyards and Winery.

Luxurious wellness experiences
The Forbes Five Star Award Salamander Spa can create a marvelous wellness experience in its 23,000-square-foot facility. Many of its 14 treatment rooms have private outdoor terraces. We enjoyed an amazing couple’s massage in the couple’s suite. A wonderful tranquil outdoor spa courtyard extended our wellness experience with an infinity-edged relaxation pool, hot tub, and fireplace.

Exquisite dining
The taste of luxury continues with the culinary creations of Chef de Cuisine, Bin Lu, in Salamander’s Five-Star restaurant, Harriman’s. The menu emphasizes ingredients locally sourced that celebrate the rich resources and history of Virginia’s fertile Piedmont Region. Whether a Small Beginning like Chilled Lobster & Coconut Curry, an Appetizer like Smoked Chanterelle Risotto, or one of their top-quality cuts of beef, the culinary team’s creations are nothing short of dazzling. Harriman’s offers a Sunday Brunch and an Afternoon Tea on Saturdays.

For a more relaxed dining venue, enjoy Gold Cup Wine Bar. Sophisticated yet casual, Gold Cup offers delectable menu options including the freshest sushi and a wonderful wine list with some excellent Virginia wines. Enjoy an expertly-crafted signature cocktail and a game of pool on Gold Cup’s championship table.

For a unique dining experience consider one of the scheduled cooking classes in Harriman’s Cooking Studio. Like a private Chef’s Table, the Studio has guests participate in the preparation of a wonderful meal. Other Studio events include mixology classes or sommelier-led wine tastings.

A Capital experience
Continue your Salamander experience with a visit to our nation’s capital. Located along the Southwest Waterfront, Salamander DC offers views of The Wharf, the Jefferson Memorial, and the Tidal Basin and its iconic cherry blossom trees. Salamander DC’s 373 rooms and suites are beautifully appointed, including 51 spacious suites newly redesigned to offer ultimate comfort and versatility. Salamander Spa is a new, dual-level sanctuary offering a wide assortment of skincare and beauty therapies, as well as a variety of massages, body treatments, holistic facials, and Sound Bowl Therapy. Two couple’s suites are wonderfully designed for a shared experience. A state-of-the-art fitness room, Movement Studio, heated indoor pool, and tranquil relaxation rooms will enhance your wellness experience.
