Putnam County Outdoors

Fishing, Fairways, Lake Days, and Late-Summer Celebrations

By Michael McKensie

Scenic parks, varied golf experiences, Lake Mahopac, and two signature August events make Putnam County an inviting destination for travelers seeking fresh air, recreation, and a slower pace.

Lake Mahopac

When summer calls for a change of scenery, Putnam County offers a refreshing mix of outdoor recreation, peaceful landscapes, and welcoming local experiences. From wooded parks and quiet fishing spots to rolling fairways and time on the water, the county makes it easy to trade city noise for a more relaxed rhythm.

Anglers can begin at Putnam County Veterans Memorial Park or Clarence Fahnestock State Park, where lakes and ponds provide opportunities to catch bass, trout, and sunfish. Whether the goal is a full day on the water or simply a few quiet hours with a rod and reel, the setting is part of the appeal. Forested surroundings, open skies, and scenic views create an atmosphere that feels restorative even before the first bite.

Golfers also have plenty of choices. Public options include Putnam County Golf Course in Mahopac, Centennial Golf Club in Carmel, and Vails Grove Golf Course in Brewster. Private clubs such as Mahopac Golf and Beach Club and The Sedgewood Club in Carmel provide additional options for experienced players. When the weather refuses to cooperate, Golf On 6 in Mahopac keeps the game going with indoor simulators, leagues, lessons, and year-round practice opportunities.

For a slower-paced afternoon, Lake Mahopac is one of the county’s standout destinations. The 587-acre lake, the largest natural lake in Putnam County, is well suited for cruising, fishing, swimming, and simply enjoying the view. Visitors without a boat can rent 20- or 24-foot pontoon boats from Mahopac Marina for a half or full day. No boating license is required, and a safety orientation is provided before departure. Afterward, nearby waterfront restaurants offer an easy way to extend the experience.

August also brings two lively community events. Ferragosto Evening in the Piazza takes place August 15 at Mahopac-Carmel Chamber Park, while the 15th Annual Putnam County Wine & Music Fest returns to Putnam County Veterans Memorial Park on August 22 and 23. Together, they add music, food, and local flavor to a month already filled with reasons to get outside. For visitors planning a day trip or an easy overnight stay, Putnam County offers a compact itinerary with enough variety to suit nearly every summer mood.
