Fall Into Putnam

As summer gives way to autumn, Putnam County comes alive with colorful landscapes, family farms, Hudson River views and a full calendar of music, food and cultural events—making September an ideal time for a quick getaway from New York City.

Just north of New York City, Putnam County offers one of the Hudson Valley’s easiest escapes into fall. September brings farm visits, scenic drives, outdoor adventures and a lively calendar of festivals and performances—all surrounded by the first brilliant colors of the season.

Start with the county’s local farms, where the experience goes well beyond picking up fresh produce. Visitors can meet goats and Highland cows at Ridge Ranch Farm, shop for fresh-cut pork and chicken at Lobster Hill Farm, or satisfy a fall craving with freshly picked produce and the popular apple cider donuts at Salinger’s Orchard.

When the leaves begin turning, one of the simplest ways to experience Putnam is a drive along Route 301 from Carmel to Cold Spring. Stops along the way can include the peaceful grounds of Chuang Yen Monastery, seasonal gardens at Stonecrop Gardens, and historic Boscobel House & Gardens. The Cold Spring waterfront provides another picture-perfect stop, with sweeping Hudson River scenery nearby.

Those who would rather experience the season on foot can explore trails in Fahnestock State Park, Hudson Highlands State Park, Michael Ciaiola Conservation Area or Arden Point. For a view from above, the 80-foot Nimham Fire Tower rewards the climb with an expansive panorama of autumn color. Cyclists can also follow the Putnam County Trailway, part of the larger Empire State Trail system.

September’s event calendar offers plenty of reasons to stay awhile. The Boscobel Chamber Music Festival, September 3–10, celebrates its fifth season with four public programs overlooking the Hudson River. From September 10–13, Carmel hosts the Putnam County Feast of San Gennaro, featuring live music, a carnival and Italian favorites.

The German American Social Club of Peekskill holds Oktoberfest September 12–13, while Putnam County Golf Course gets into the spirit with Oktoberfest celebrations September 18 and 25, pairing live entertainment with traditional fare and its popular barbecue. The month concludes with the Patterson Rotary Blues & BBQ Festival, September 19–20.

Whether the goal is foliage, food, music or simply a little fresh air, September may be one of the best times of year to discover Putnam County.
